N2 - In this paper, we argue that the main bank in Japan acts as a quasi-inside monitor of the firm, delegated by other lenders, and that main bank relationships increase the debt capacity of the firm by reducing the agency cost of debt. This paper measures human capital development in the Japanese workforce after WWII. An increase in workers’ years of schooling is believed to have aided Japan’s economic growth after WWII. The development of human capital has acquired increasing importance for Japan’s future economic growth given its aging population.

After returning to Japan, Toshikiyo moved to Kojima, Kurashiki—often regarded as the denim capital of Japan, hence the name “Kapital”—to begin studying the intricacies of denim manufacturing. After studying the trade for several years, Toshikiyo opened his first factory in 1984 and, soon after, opened his first storefront for denim and vintage garments in 1995.
