Here, we demonstrate a systematic shape variation of zinc blende CdSe nanocrystals in a modified organometallic approach, in which distinct shapes of cube-shaped, sphere-shaped, tetrahedron-shaped, and branched CdSe nanocrystals with high yield and good uniformity are obtained. The structure is closely related to the structure of diamond. The hexagonal polymorph of sphalerite is wurtzite, and the trigonal polymorph is matraite. Wurtzite is the higher temperature polymorph, sphalerite will become wurtzite at 1020°C. The lattice constant for zinc sulfide in the zinc blende crystal structure is 0.541 nm. The Zincblende structure (also written "zinc blende") is named after the mineral zincblende (sphalerite), one form of zinc sulfide (β-ZnS).
