It is a robust crab of a reddish-brown colour, having an oval carapace with a characteristic "pie crust" edge and black tips to the claws.
The Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) fishery began in southeastern Alaska in 1916 and has been characterized by large fluctuations on annual and decadal scales (Orensanz et al., 1998). Large variation in the Dungeness crab harvest is not unique to Alaska; similar fluctuations have been documented in California and their causes are the subject of an ongoing debate (Higgins et al., 1997a, 1997b). Brown crab (Cancer pagurus), blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus), blue swimming crabs (Portunus pelagicus), and red swimming crabs (Portunus haanii) are among the most commercially available species of crabmeat globally.

A mature adult may have a carapace width up to 25 cm (10 in) and weigh up to 3 kg (6.6 lb). Unlike Alaskan and dungeness crab, snow crab prices have risen in response to weak supplies. Snow crab quotas in Alaska were cut by 40 percent, and this helped push snow crab prices up significantly. Norway reports excellent catches of the local crab species Cancer pagurus, which is very similar to the dungeness crab (Cancer magister).

In 2016, the California dungeness crab fishery was hampered by the presence of domoic acid toxin. Earlier in 2017, the situation was reported to be better. Now it is reported that the fishery in California could be delayed again because of new occurrences of this toxin. The dungeness crab season in Oregon has also been delayed, due to low meat yields.

Rock crab landings for 1999 were 790,000 pounds and have averaged 1.2 million pounds per year from 1991-1999. It is not as sought after as Dungeness crab due to the considerably lower amount of flesh.
